I was born in Staten Island New York & have lived in Northern Michigan since 1988. I am the youngest & have 3 brothers which made my parents life very eventful during my teenage years. I give my parents allot of credit for being so patient.
I grew up in a very musical household. We always had music on & my dad &/or brothers were always playing an instrument or two. And I remember my moms favorite records were those of Neil Diamond. We were always more likely to have music playing then the TV on. I was passed on the "love of music" gene but I would never call myself musically inclined. I have never been able to play an instrument...but would play the drums if I could ever learn how. Just not my nitch I suppose. However talking & listening to music....two of my favorite things!!!
I'm a bit of a chatter box & social butterfly so the fact that I actually get paid to talk has always been a little joke amongst friends & family. I'm not a big fan of country music but do love & respect all types of music.
Now how I came to being a radio DJ....
My parents had managed several different radio stations so I had been surrounded with radio for many years pretty early on in life. When I was a wee lil one I used to hold a tape recorder up to the radio (yes...back in the day) & record my favorite songs & then I would record myself introducing them...now those are funny tapes to hear now!
I was told by a DJ when i was 15 that I had a great voice for radio & should consider doing a commercial. But at the time was surprisingly too shy to think about actually talking on the radio. Then in my high school years I was always unsure as to what "I wanted to be when I grew-up." Then in my senior year of highshool I took the radio class at Cadillac High school. The ironic part is that my initial reason for taking the class was to be with my friends & then after a few short days, I was hooked....line & sinker! Then one day a program director from a local radio station (96.7) called & asked my teacher, Marland Ream, if he had any students ready to go on the air & he said he had one. Marland, or Mr.Ream in High school, was an inspirational teacher & really encouraged my to pursue radio which has turned out to be a life changing & wonderful thing. And the rest is history as they say! I have been working for MacDonald Garber Broadcasting since 1988 & truly love my job! I have also been fortunate enough to work in TV over the years as well so I get a lil of both worlds. I went to Baker College & tried to dabble in a few other fields but have always ended up back in radio &/or broadcasting. It is my passion. And I believe that music is a very powerful thing & truly is the way to someones soul. |
